I am in the computer business. There. I said it! I have been so since 1983, and mostly in the hardware field, being a field technician for a couple of major international companies. I grew tired of just fixing PC's, so I ventured out and turned my talents to software support.
In the software field, I went the OS/2 route, doing second-level support on both OS/2 v2.11 and OS/2 v3.0 Warp based systems at a major banking concern here in Johannesburg in a help desk environment during '96 and '97. Pretty soon, it became apparent the OS/2 and its related networking software products are not enough, and I attended a couple of courses in Lotus Notes administration.
This extended onto various platforms, and I then started to support Windows NT and Windows 95 as well. This came to good stead, and in '98 I accepted a position as a Systems Integration Engineer at a very well respected company, where I could practice both my hardware and software skills.
I was quite happy in my job, but it is also said that one will never amass a fortune whilst working for a salary ... Hehehe! Thus came the big chance to apply my skills on a contracting basis. I started contracting for the biggest vehicle finance bank in South Africa, doing third-level OS/2 support during '99. You may wonder whether there is still any money to be made in this field?
Currently in South Africa, yes. But as OS/2 is slowly being phased out in favour of Windows NT generally, I started studying again in my old age, this time for my MCSD, as a Visual Basic developer. Just keeping my options open, you know ... VB developers are currently in great demand all over the world! And so I am now contracting for a fast growing software house as VB Developer.
